The Babe is Wise

In the bookcase behind the door of my study ar the Viragos I bought years ago as a job lot and am only now getting round to reading. The book at the end stands out or would if I ever shut the door, for being taller than the Viragos and having a pale blue cover. Whether I bought them all at the same time I no longer remember but have come to assume I did. A few nights ago, deciding against The Little Ottleys (for being too long), I pulled out next the pale blue book and discovered it to be an anthology of 31  Australian women’s short stories, published in 1987.

Flicking through, I thought how lovely and young so many of the authors were, and checked their years of birth. Ten to fifteen years before mine. Which brought to mind a discussion I had here or elsewhere with Sue (WG) that the authors of Gen 4, writers of the books which came out when we boomers were young adults, like the musicians we listened to, were not themselves boomers but were born during or just before the War.

Then chasing up a cover photo, I came up with not one but two snippets of history. First, the cover picture is a portrait of Australian author Jean Campbell, painted in 1940 (not 1909 as stated on the title page) by Lina Bryans and now held in the NGV. The title of the painting is The Babe is Wise. The second is from an article by Jean Campbell herself which explains that the painting is named after a novel of that name she wrote in 1939. Incidentally, Campbell is not included in the collection.

Because I see her oft times in our corner of the blogosphere I started with Carmel Bird, Buttercup and Wendy, a cheerful little story about the prettiest girl in Tasmania 1955-59 and how she didn’t marry but made a career and bought a house in Kew (Melbourne) and the discrete part in her life played by her former high school boyfriend –

a boy with ice blue eyes and a very attractive laugh. [They] went together to school dances to which he wore a white sports coat with a pink carnation and she wore an orange skirt beneath which undulated a vast white petticoat edged with rope.

It doesn’t end how you might think.

I’m moving backwards and forwards, selecting randomly. Next is a typical Helen Garner. Her husband leaves, she cries, lives with friends, her daughter bangs her eye, cries “you don’t know how to comfort..”

Robyn Sheiner, a WA woman “with many Aboriginal relatives in the north of the state” imagines herself as an older woman at her sister’s funeral in Broome. The sister has worked all her life as a servant in a convent some distance out of town. The sisters, having a white father, were stolen and handed over to the nuns, and the story reflects on their lives.

Another Aboriginal woman, Kantjuringa (Lallie Lennon) is an Antikirinya woman from northern South Australia. Her story is an extract from her testimony concerning the Maralinga atom bomb tests in the 1950s which were conducted on Aboriginal homelands. She’s just had a baby in the creek bed and these army trucks start going past and “a big war tank – guns sticking out, you know, it was frightening.” A few days later they hear two or three bombs in the distance and see the mushroom clouds, and a few days after that, another bomb, and the smoke is blowing towards them and they and all the trees are covered in dust and soon the kids are getting sick, overheating, the little girls are having fits and the station lady gives them castor oil.

Some of the authors are well known Judith Wright, Kate Grenville, Joan London, Beverly Farmer, Thea Astley, Elizabeth Jolley. Olga Masters I had to look up – she’s got lots of famous children.  Her little story is of a man, his wife just died, who must marry again before he runs out of dishes and clean bed linen.

I think my favourite was In Defence of Lord Byron by Ilona Palmer, a little mix of life in Melbourne and growing up in Yugoslavia, her school friends going to faraway places to build socialism, “or laying a few railway sleepers and getting pregnant in the process”, as her father put it. A story about her, not “a friend told me”; growing into middle age with her husband; dreaming of a man’s bedroom, realistic, his undies on the floor in the corner; “he did not ask me when he could see me again”; a dream realised, or a dream lost?

Thea Astley’s is a disappointing story of hippy stereotypes. I move on to Jolley, a dense story intermingling school days, nursing days, single-motherhood. An extract I’m guessing from My Father’s Moon published a couple of years later.

  1. I haven’t read a short story collection in a while, and I’m happy to see how the themes in O’Connor’s novel carry from one story to the next, suggesting where her interests were. It’s harder when a collection has different authors because each story feels like something new rather than a fabric square in the quilt.

    • I hadn’t seen that in O’Connor because I’m just jumping in and out, perhaps when I’ve read a few more. I suppose short story collections can sometimes address a theme. This one is interesting, in that the publisher is also one of the editors, but he doesn’t seem to have had anything in mind other than good stories by a very good cross-section of Australian women writers.

  2. I’ve seen that cover image a few times, now I’m trying to remember where…
    I’ve never read Jean Campbell, I don’t even have her on my TBR, and I don’t think she got a mention in Jean Vernay’s books or Geordie Williamson’s Burning Library. She’s not included in the text Classics series…

    • You may have seen it in the NGV portrait gallery. Or just bumped into the book without picking it up. The Oxford Companion to Aust.Lit. gives Campbell a few lines “a prolific writer of light novels”.

  3. Bruce Pascoe was an editor? How interesting. You are tempting me of course to read my copy.

    You MUST know Olga Masters? I think Lisa has reviewed her (though maybe it’s another Aussie blogger who has) and I have certainly mentioned her though haven’t read her since blogging. She was a journalist, but a late bloomer in terms of novels. She died in her 50s, which was such a shock at the time – to me anyhow. I was reading her when I was reading Jolley, Garner, Grenville – and Astley, though Astley was already established while these others were getting going. Maybe when we get to HER gen, I’ll read the one still on my TBR. She was a good short story writer – like most of those writers were – as well as a novelist.

    • I hope you’ll read your copy – it actually reads more early 70s than late 80s and I would like your opinion on that. I was more interested that Pascoe was a publisher, at least one of the women in the anthology he was publishing a collection for. And isn’t a very wide spread of good women writers for a small publisher.

      • I’d love to Bill, I just wish I wasn’t so behind in my reading. Maybe I’ll try to read it in stages. I like that it has indigenous writers which seems fairly rare for the time, but Pascoe may be why!

  4. This sounds great although I could never manage to flit round, I need to read stories in “order”. Did you tick them off in the contents list as you read them?

    But “deciding against The Little Ottleys (for being too long)” – nooo! You can always read the three novels separately (though I bet you won’t be able to) and they’re so light and clever, you will whizz through them.

    • I’m sorry now I wasted a new Georgette Heyer, I could have been read an Ottley. Do the men have nicely turned legs in patterned silk stockings?
      No, I just flit. And not just between stories but to and fro Patrick White’s Cockatoos which would be hard going without some light relief.

  5. That story about the cover and the history behind it is fascinating. Why do you think the editor selected this painting for the cover and didn’t include any works by Campbell?

    Your comment about Kantjuringa’s story also makes me wonder: Is this a collection of short stories or was Kantjuringa’s story non-fiction? I’ve never read a collection that includes both fiction and non-fiction elements. I am quite intrigued.

    I love that you bounced around reading. I could never do that, though I often aspire to in short story collections. I am nervous that I might skip a story entirely and accidentally! Silly, I know, but I don’t want an element I might love to be omitted.

    • The painting is probably better known than the subject and maybe Pascoe just wanted an excuse to use the name. Pascoe is well known for his writing on Aboriginal subjects I’m sure he wished to make a point by including Indigenous stories. The Maralinga story being non fiction doesn’t mess with the flow of the stories generally, I’m sure quite a number of them are lightly fictionalised autobiography.

  6. A job lot of Virago paperbacks. Is that like a purchase at an estate sale, where it’s a boxload of assorted items? Either way, I’d like one of those, I think. That imprint has introduced me to so many fine women writers. I like the way you describe this collection on the shelf, something of an interloper. You must feel some relief as you finish your dreaded short story collections. 🙂

    • I’m not finished yet. I haven’t read a word in the last fortnight between work and a day with mum. Well, except news and politics on my phone and this morning I raced through another FO’C to be able to respond to Melanie’s second post. I no longer remember where I bought my Viragos, whenever I see cheap (second hand) classics I snap them up and read them when I can.
